Pearl's in the Garden
Students grow Heirloom tomato seeds in the classroom. As the seedlings grow, the students are to find a person in their neighbourhood or community that they think deserves a plant. They write to the teacher explaining why that person deserves the plant. The students then write a letter to the person they've chosen explaining about growing heirloom tomatoes, that they had to chose someone and why they chose that person. On the May long weekend they take the plant and the letter and deliver it to their chosen person. Click on the link to see a possible lesson plan that can be altered and adjusted to fit any grade. Also, there are examples of student's work.
For a Better Life
Actors research their family's history to find the first person who came to Canada in their family. They then use this to create a character that they will perform. There is a list of questions to answer that will assist in the process.
